WELCOME FRIENDS, FAMILY & FACULTY!

This blog is an art history experiment for our Italian Renaissance travel course. We hope that you, our visitors, will not only take some time to read about what we are studying, but will ALSO feel free to make comments or ask us questions...especially after we see (most of) these things in person. As we travel, we will offer personal reflections on our experiences. After we fly out on the 17th, follow us as we visit Rome (May 18-20), Florence (20-24), and Venice (24-25). We return on Thursday, May 26...just in time for the holiday weekend.

“Gaddi, Baroncelli Chapel”

1.   Taddeo Gaddi was a faithful follower of the artist Giotto and is most widely known for his achievement in completing the fresco cycle within the Baroncelli Chapel in Santa Croce, Florence.

2.   The frescoes completed by Gaddi were depicting scenes of the Life of the Virgin and the altarpiece of the Coronation of the Virgin with Saints was signed by Giotto.

3.   The frescoes on the vault of the chapel respresent the Four Cardinal Virtues.

4.   The stained glass window was designed by Gaddi and features standing figures of saints along with the Stigmatization of St. Francis.

5.   The frescoes are set on the chapel appropriate to each individual pieces message and symbolism expressed.

6.   Although Giotto signed the altarpiece on the chapel, there is still much debate to whether it was commissioned among many artists (as a workshop production) or simply Giotto.

7.   Son = Agnolo did the altarpiece
8.   Gaddi was most likely following Giotto’s  style in which inspired many other emerging artists in Florence, Italy.
